Hodgkin Lymphoma: Emotional Well-Being

Living well after being treated for Hodgkin Lymphoma and related cancers involves taking care of both your physical and mental well-being. Dana-Farber has tips on how to care for your emotional health after cancer.

Reach out to your healthcare provider or call/text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline 24/7) immediately if you are in crisis while reading the contents of this website.

Mental Health
After treatment, many cancer survivors struggle with the fear of recurrence, depression, anxiety, and concerns about social/family relationships or employment. If you are having any issues that are decreasing your quality of life or emotional well-being, you should talk to your healthcare provider. There are also mental health healthcare providers in your community that can help you with any psychosocial concerns you may have related to your cancer or survivorship.

Financial Health
The financial aspect of care can be a source of stress that can remain ongoing into survivorship. The need for additional screening and medications may affect financial health of cancer survivors. Financial toxicity can cause the delay of medical care and decreased quality of life.

The Dana-Farber Patient Financial Assistance program offers patients financial assistance on a case-by-case basis to reduce barriers to high-quality cancer care, including discounts for low-income patients with no insurance, medical hardship discounts, Massachusetts Health Safety Net assurance, payment plans, and financial counseling services. Meeting with a Dana-Farber Resource Specialist may also help guide patients and their families to resources regarding their financial needs, or practical and legal matters. There also exists external financial assistance for cancer care and survivorship, on a case-by-case basis, through the American Cancer Society in Massachusetts, Livestrong, the Ruth Cheatham Foundation, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, among other national resources.

Wellness and Balanced Living
Integrative therapies are a holistic approach to wellness and balanced living - examples include meditation, aromatherapy, yoga, tai chi, and mindfulness, among others. They help to provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support to survivors and those close to them. The Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies and Healthy Living is dedicated to the enhancement of quality of life during and after a cancer diagnosis. The Zakim Center offers many resources to patients and their families, including integrative medicine consultations, acupuncture, massage therapy, expressive arts therapy, meditation and mindfulness, and supports for pediatric populations as well. The Zakim Center has expanded their offerings to both in-person and virtual services, although the availability varies depending on the type of service.

Resources Available for Emotional Well-Being after Treatment with Dr. Ann Partridge
Survivorship education and support programs are available. Survivors interested in becoming involved with mentorship could become involved with programs like Dana-Farber's One-to-One program, which connects patients and families who have already experienced diagnosis and treatment with those who are facing it for the first time. The Dana-Farber Family Connections program supports adult cancer patients who are parents and their children, offering guidance, information, and resources and to identify needs within families.
